LASIK Suegery

Q. What is LASIK?

Eye is one of the most important parts of the human body. An eye provides us the vision. It enables us to enjoy the beautiful world. Eye helps in almost each and every work that we do, during the course of the day. So, it is very necessary that we should take proper care of our eyes. Many times we go through various eye problems. Therefore, for proper functioning of our eyes, we sometimes go for treatment or undergo a surgery. There are different eye surgeries available among them lasik laser eye surgery is the most popular one.

LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person’s dependency on glasses or contact lenses LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A mechanical microkeratome (a blade device) or a laser keratome (a laser device) is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma, the middlesection of the cornea. Pulses from a computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the stroma and the flap is replaced.

Q. How does LASIK work ?

During the LASIK procedure, a specially trained eye surgeon first creates a precise, thin hinged corneal flap using a microkeratome. The surgeon then pulls back the flap to expose the underlying corneal tissue, and then the excimer laser ablates (reshapes) the cornea in a unique pre-specified pattern for each patient. The flap is then gently repositioned onto the underlying cornea without sutures.

Q. Types of LASIK ?

There are a variety of different types of lasers used in ophthalmology. All LASIK procedures are performed with a specific type of laser (excimer laser), so in one sense, all LASIK procedures are similar. Further, there are different types of laser ablations that can be performed ,including conventional laser treatments, wavefront-optimized treatments, and wavefront-guided treatments. Finally, a completely different type of laser (femtosecond laser) can be used instead of a mechanical microkeratome to create the LASIK (corneal) flap.

Q. Conventional LASIK ?

conventional LASIK is the ablation pattern available on most lasers that treats directly based upon the patient’s glasses prescription, with fixed treatment parameters for each patient. This type of treatment is effective for most patients but can result in more visual aberrations such as glare, halos, and night vision issues than other forms of laser treatment.

Q. Am I a good candidate for LASIK ?

Refractive surgery is not for everyone. In addition to having a complete eye exam, there are certain questions you should ask yourself before considering LASIK or other refractive procedures.

1. Am I willing to accept a low but real risk of surgical complications?

Even though modern LASIK is extremely safe with rare complications, there are still times when unavoidable complications occur that can negatively affect your vision.

2. Does my career allow me to have LASIK ?

Although there are now very few organizations that prohibit their employees or members to have refractive surgery, if there is any doubt, then it is important to ask your employer, professional society, or military service whether or not it is allowed for you to undergo refractive surgery.

3. Has my vision been stable long enough to have LASIK?

While minor changes in your prescription are not uncommon from year to year, if your prescription continues to get progressively stronger (for example, more myopic, more hyperopic, or more astigmatism) each year, then you may not yet be a good candidate for refractive surgery.

4. Do I have any health conditions that make me a poor surgical candidate ?

Certain advanced autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, may influence postoperative healing.

5. Do my recreational activities make me a bad surgical candidate ?

There is a lifelong risk of LASIK flap dislocation if there is significant trauma to the eye, so people who participate in contact sports such as boxing, martial arts, or wrestling are not likely not be a good candidate for LASIK. In these instances, other refractive procedures, especially surface ablation, may be more appropriate choices.

6. Am I too young or too old to have LASIK ?

There are no hard and fast rules about the appropriate age to have LASIK. However, patients under age 18 are rarely stable enough for LASIK, and older patients may begin to develop cataracts or other eye health issues that preclude them from undergoing LASIK. Again, the best way to determine these things is have a complete eye exam.

7. Do I have keratoconus ?

Keratoconus is a corneal disease resulting from decreased corneal strength that can be detected as an abnormal curvature on testing. Patients that have evidence of keratoconus are not candidates for LASIK or surface ablation, but new technologies may become available for these individuals.

Precautions

The safety and effectiveness of refractive procedures has not been determined in patients with some diseases.

Discuss with your doctor if you have a history of any of the following : -

* Herpes simplex or Herpes zoster (shingles) involving the eye area.
* Glaucoma, glaucoma suspect, or ocular hypertension.
* Eye diseases, such as uveitis/iritis (inflammations of the eye)
* Eye injuries or previous eye surgeries.
* Keratoconu

Q. What should I expect before, during and after surgery ?

What you should expect before, during, and after surgery may vary slightly from patient to patient and from surgeon to surgeon; however, the information listed below is a general guideline for the LASIK process. Each patient may also have slightly different expectations, and it is important to talk to your eye doctor about these expectations before surgery.

Before surgery

Prior to any procedure, you will need a full eye examination by your eye doctor. This process will help determine if you are a good candidate for surgery and whether you have certain risk factors listed above. If you wear contact lenses, you should take them out for many days before your initial examination and use your glasses full-time.

This is important because contact lenses will change the shape of your cornea, and if your cornea has not had enough time without the contact lenses, then the measurements taken before surgery may be inaccurate. You should discuss the amount of time you are required to be out of your contact lenses with the surgical center performing your evaluation….

During surgery

lasik eye surgery normally takes less than 30 minutes to perform surgery on both eyes. You will be taken to the surgical suite and placed into a reclining chair or bed where you will lie on your back. The laser system consists of a microscope that is attached to a large machine and a computer screen.

After you are lying down and have been positioned underneath the laser, numbing eye drops will be placed in your eyes, and the area around your eyes will be cleaned thoroughly. After your surgical team, including your surgeons and assistants, have reviewed and confirmed all of your treatment information, a lid speculum will be placed to keep your eyelids open during the surgery. When it is time to create the LASIK flap, a suction device will be placed on your eye that will fixate it. During this period, you may feel pressure that may be somewhat uncomfortable, and your vision will go dark for a brief period of time…

After surgery

As soon as the procedure is finished, you may notice that your eyes feel irritated, burn, itch, or feel like there is something in them. Your eyes will frequently water or tear excessively, and your vision will be somewhat blurry. The most important thing to avoid during this time is rubbing your eyes. Do not rub your eyes under any circumstances, as rubbing can dislocate or shift the corneal flap, which could require you to have an additional procedure to reposition it.

Using copious artificial tears and resting with your eyes closed will most effectively ease these sensations. In some instances, there may be increased discomfort or even a mild degree of pain, for which your doctor may advise you to take a pain reliever. In most cases, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, are enough to relieve the pain. In addition to artificial tears, you will have antibiotic drops and anti-inflammatory drops (steroids) to use beginning on the day of surgery that you will continue to use for days to weeks after surgery…

Q. What are the advantages of LASIK surgery ?

With careful patient screening and selection, reasonable expectations, and in the care of an experienced surgeon, most patients will be very pleased with their results.

These are some of the other advantages of LASIK : -

* LASIK is able to accurately correct most levels of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
* The procedure is fast, usually lasting only five to 10 minutes, and is generally painless.
* Because the laser is guided by a computer, it is very precise and results are very accurate.
* In most cases, a single treatment will achieve the desired outcome; however, enhancements are possible if needed, even many years after the initial surgery.

Q. What are the disadvantages of LASIK surgery ?

Because each patient will heal slightly differently, results may vary from patient to patient. LASIK could make some aspects of your vision worse, including night vision with glare and halos. LASIK may make dry-eye symptoms worse in certain individuals. In rare circumstances, LASIK can make your vision worse and not correctable with regular glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK surgery includes : -

Matthew Pruitt is the owner of NuVision Medicenters, which has offices throughout the tri-state area. He has been working with LASIK technology since 1995 and has assisted in over 25,000 LASIK eye procedures over the course of his career. In this article, he helps us better understand the basics of Custom LASIK technology.

Custom LASIK Basics:

Thanks to the advent of new technology, Custom LASIK has managed to essentially eradicate many of the night vision issues like halo and glare that some patients who underwent LASIK experienced the past.

Custom LASIK is basically like taking a fingerprint of your eye because the shape of your corneas and my corneas are completely different. In fac,t your right eye is different than your left eye. What custom technology does is essentially map out the fingerprint of your cornea so that the laser can actually reshape the surface of the eye based on your specific characteristics. So what you end up with is vision that actually can be sharper than what you have with your glasses or contact lenses, and 25 times more precise than what you have with your glasses.

Three years ago, before the latest generation of Visx technology came out, which is the Visx Star S4 laser that reshapes the cornea, one of the common side effects of LASIK was problems with night vision. Those problems usually occurred for one of two reasons: Either patients had extremely high degrees of astigmatism—they were in a high-risk category for that type of problem—or they came into the procedure having large pupils.

Now, new Custom LASIK technology has erased many of those issues of the past. Whereas side effects effecting night vision once impacted roughly 25% of patients, today that figure is less than 3%. So Custom LASIK has been a huge gain in regards to eliminating complications for patients and increasing the likelihood of a favorable outcome, which is why the new technology has really improved the success of LASIK and the overall benefits that patients gain from it.

Patients now have a great likelihood of getting not just perfect results, but better than perfect results. Thanks to the use of new Custom LASIK technology, 75% of patients are now getting 20/15 outcomes. That’s just a bit better than perfect vision. But when you’re thinking about getting LASIK, and you are looking at getting something that’s going to be permanent and investing your hard earned money to do it, these are the types of technological advancements you want your surgeon to be using.

Typically, the decision of whether to use traditional LASIK or custom LASIK technology in a patient’s procedure comes out during the evaluation with the doctor. However, practices like Dr. Jackson’s [NuVision's medical director] typically make it Custom LASIK a standard method of care. Commonly, other doctors may have a base fee for the LASIK surgery and then will charge additional add on fees or extra charges for patients who want something like Custom LASIK. However, because Custom LASIK is something that can only benefit patients, practices like NuVision and doctors like Dr. Jackson understand that it makes sense to use this new technology on everybody.

The information in the article is not intended to substitute for the medical expertise and advice of your healthcare provider. We encourage you to discuss any decisions about treatment or care with an appropriate healthcare provider.

What is LASIK?

Used to correct refractive errors, LASIK eye surgery is a treatment that reshapes the cornea in order to produce clear vision. The LASIK refractive eye surgery procedure can treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, and reduce patients’ dependency on contact lenses and glasses. Because refractive errors impede the focusing ability of the eye, patients who suffer from these conditions experience blurred vision. LASIK eye surgery provides these individuals with an effective treatment option, where a predetermined amount of corneal tissue is removed. This reshaping of the cornea improves the eye’s focusing power and enhances patients’ visual acuity.

LASIK Eye Surgery Cost and Financing Information

The cost of LASIK eye surgery often appears intimidating to patients considering vision correction treatment. LASIK cost varies based on the patient’s degree of refractive error and the area of the country the procedure is performed. What many patients don’t know, however, is that there are numerous LASIK financing options available that can help decrease or disperse the fee.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?

A good candidate for LASIK eye surgery must meet several general requisites. LASIK patients should be at least 18 years old, demonstrate no change in refraction for at least one year, and have realistic expectations regarding the results of LASIK eye surgery. Patients who have experienced an eye infection or injury in the past year should not undergo LASIK. If you are interested in LASIK, an eye surgeon or ophthalmologist can determine if you are a candidate for the procedure. During a comprehensive eye exam, your ophthalmologist will check your eyes and medical history. Are you a LASIK candidate? For more LASIK eye surgery information, use DocShop’s online directory to find an experienced ophthalmologist in your area.

The LASIK Procedure

To determine whether or not a patient is a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery, the ophthalmologist will conduct a pre- LASIK eye examination. Once completed, patients should follow certain guidelines in the days and weeks preceding LASIK vision correction.

The traditional LASIK vision correction procedure begins with the creation of a hinged corneal flap. After the eye is anesthetized with topical eye drops, the LASIK eye surgeon creates the flap on the outer surface of the eye to expose the underlying cornea. The flap can be created with a microkeratome (a hand-held device) or with the IntraLase laser, which allows the surgeon to create the flap using a computer-guided laser. The cornea is then reshaped using an excimer laser and the flap is replaced. Learn more about the LASIK eye surgery procedure.

After LASIK eye surgery many patients experience immediate improved vision, although it can take up to six months for vision to stabilize. Patients can expect a short LASIK surgery recovery period but there is usually little to no discomfort following the procedure. Follow-up exams ensure proper healing.

LASIK Risks and Benefits

Most patients are extremely pleased with their LASIK results. LASIK eye surgery benefits include improved visual activity, freedom from corrective eyewear, and possibly new career opportunities. Patients who achieve a successful LASIK outcome can eliminate their need for glasses or contact lenses, and enjoy the freedom of clear vision at all times. Patients can play sports, swim, spend a day at the beach, and participate in various activities without the restrictions that glasses and contacts bring. LASIK eye surgery is a safe and effective treatment that has continued to gain popularity among patients.

A small number of patients one to five percent experience LASIK eye surgery complications. LASIK risks include sensitivity to light, haloed or glared vision, irregular astigmatism, dry eyes, loss of visual clarity, and sensitivity. Fortunately, advances in LASIK technology have dramatically reduced complications and many problems can be easily corrected with additional treatment.

Statistics LASIK Results

LASIK eye surgery has become the most popular vision surgery in the country. More than one million Americans undergo LASIK each year. LASIK surgery statistics and information from the FDA indicate that complications occur in just 1 to 5 percent of patients. In most cases, LASIK treatment provides patients with exceptional results, with many patients experiencing 20/20 vision or better following LASIK eye surgery.

LASIK Technology

If you are interested in LASIK vision correction but are nervous about undergoing a surgical treatment, read about the latest developments in LASIK technology. Advances in LASIK eye surgery now provide patients with the safest and most accurate form of treatment ever available. The development of the excimer laser made LASIK eye surgery possible. Excimer lasers are incredibly precise, only penetrating a microscopic amount of tissue at a time for remarkable accuracy. New-generation microkeratomes provide increased accuracy and safety for LASIK eye surgeons during the creation of the corneal flap. A microkeratome, or hand-held blade, allows the surgeon access to the cornea so irregularities can be corrected.

For your convenience, DocShop has compiled a list of frequently asked LASIK questions. After consulting this source for LASIK eye surgery information, find an ophthalmologist near you using the DocShop directory.

Testimonials from LASIK Patients

If you are interested in reading what previous LASIK patients have to say, read LASIK reviews and testimonials. These reviews provide patients considering LASIK eye surgery firsthand information and an insider’s look at the experiences of real LASIK patients.

Choosing a LASIK Surgeon

Selecting an appropriate LASIK surgeon is perhaps the most important step in the LASIK procedure. When choosing a LASIK eye surgeon, your decision should not be based solely on the cost of surgery or office location. Selecting an experienced, reputable, and qualified physician is an important factor in your outcome. Patients should choose their LASIK eye surgeon based on thorough research and individual concerns.

Eye surgery comes with the promise of improving one’s vision permanently so that the need for glasses or contact lenses is no longer there. So you are no longer dependent on them.In a way, you discover new liberty and freedom.

How is it done?

It takes about five to ten minutes to complete the operation. First a mild anesthetic will be administered. Also eye drops are used to numb the eye and avoid pain during the operation. Though the operation is pain free there have been patients who have complained of discomfort. Once the eye is numb, a little device known as the microkeratome is attached to a suction ring placed on the eye.

The microkeratome has a blade which cuts a thin flap on the surface of the cornea. The doctor will next fold back the flap and expose the stroma which is basically a layer of tissue. The stroma is searched for debris and is then dried. Now the surgeon will ask you to focus on a fixed spot while he, with the aid of laser mends the corneal tissue according to results of pre-operation examination. Once through, the flap is put back to position and an eye patch is provided to allow it to heal.

Which are the conditions that are treated?

Basically eye surgery is used to cure three main types of eye conditions-myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Myopia, also know as nearsightedness is the problem of not being able to see what is far away without glasses. Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, is the other way round. Astigmatism is something different where the patient has irregularities in his cornea which as a result distorts the image formed on the retina of the eye.

Who is an ideal candidate?

An ideal candidate for this surgery should be over 21 years of age. The person should not be into contact sports or any similar physical activities. The visual stability over the past year should be good and there should not be any history of previous eye diseases or eye injury. Pregnant women are also not eligible for that surgery.

What are the risks?

This eye surgery comes with its own set of risks and they should always be considered seriously before you actually sign-up for an operation. Problems that might be caused due to this surgery are double vision, glare, and halo. One’s nighttime vision can also be affected, especially for certain operation procedures. Even permanent blurry vision and diminished contrast may be the effects of this operation.

People today are too busy to deal with the daily hassle of cleaning and sterilizing their contact lenses. They don’t want to worry about packing glasses, contact lens solution, cases and extra contacts when they travel out of town. With the new extended wear lenses, these concerns are a thing of the past.

Today you can find contacts made specifically for longer-term wear, whether it’s overnight, a week or two, or even a month. These products, when worn, are made to deliver more oxygen to the eye. They allow eyes to “breathe”, and they cut down on infections that thrive in oxygen-poor areas. These lenses are made from a newer material, silicone hydrogel, which makes for a more enjoyable lens-wearing experience.

Not only do these lenses provide a more comfortable wear, they can also reduce potential eye infections. Each time the lenses are removed, they’re disposed of, and a new pair is worn. This eliminates the chances of reintroducing bacteria to the eye. Also, the chance for contact lens loss is greatly reduced, as they are touched much less frequently than daily lenses.

They’re not without their risks, however. They do need to be changed as directed. They may not correct certain vision problems, like severe astigmatism. But to wake up in the middle of the night and clearly see the clock is a dream come true for some who’ve been tethered to thick glasses all their lives. Imagine getting ready for work in the morning with little thought to your vision. These lenses make it possible.

Some who’ve considered LASIK have even passed up the surgery in favor of essentially carefree lenses. These lenses don’t require any invasive surgery, yet they’re a simple way to obtain perfect to near-perfect vision. Handling lenses once a month is a very welcome change from a daily regimen that includes contact lens removal and insertion.

You may be able to enjoy the fantastic, low-maintenance vision you’ve always wanted. Check with your eye care professional to determine which contact lens option is right for you.

Any surgery has its own sets of risks and complications. So it is advisable that before going into a surgery a patient should have a clear and complete knowledge of what the operation involves. It is generally the surgeon who explains beforehand what the patient might expect prior to and after the operation. Even the process of operation is at times explained, albeit in a lucid and easy to understand manner. It should be no else with this surgery also.

Why would one go for LASIK surgery? Primarily because it is generally accepted these days that that surgery comes with the promise of improving one’s vision permanently so that the need for glasses or contact lenses is no longer there. So you are no longer dependent on them. In a way, you discover new liberty and freedom.

So whom do you go to for a LASIK surgery? To the optometrist, of course. The first thing he will do is to conduct a number of tests on you to see if you are the right candidate for this surgery. Basically this eye surgery is used to cure three main types of eye conditions myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Myopia, also know as nearsightedness is the problem of not being able to see what is far away without glasses. Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, is the other way round. Astigmatism is something different where the patient has irregularities in his cornea which as a result distorts the image formed on the retina of the eye.

What will the optometrist be looking for? There are a few basic things that any optometrist will look for before a eye surgery. That would primarily include your eye health history. In case of a particular few diseases the chances of you undergoing a this surgery will significantly decrease. These would include glaucoma, herpes, eye injuries or thin corneas.

Any of these conditions can disqualify you as a suitable candidate for eye surgery. Another important criterion is whether there has been an alteration in your eyewear prescription over the last year. Before this operation your eyes should be steady. If they are not then the optometrist might just postpone the surgery for a few months until he is satisfied that your eyes are ready to undergo that surgery.

These are some of the basic things that you need to know as part of your pre-surgery preparation. Of course once you are considered suitable for the operation the doctor will brief you about the surgery itself and post operative care.

The FDA approved lasik surgery during the 90s. So it is definitely safe at one level. In fact studies reveal that the operation is successful almost to the tune of 95% which is quite a commendable rate of success. But one must also understand that it’s a question of ones eyes and even if there are minor risks and complications, still they should be properly learnt about and understood.

In this article we will try to provide you with an objective point of view of the various complications that might be a result of a eye surgery.

Problems that might be caused due to they are double vision, glare, and halo. One’s nighttime vision can also be affected, especially for certain operation procedures. Even permanent blurry vision and diminished contrast may be the effects of this surgery.

The capacity to distinguish an item from its neighboring backdrop is a problem of contrast sensitivity. The reduction in contrast sensitivity is a comparatively common occurrence after this operation, particularly in patients with high amounts of myopia.

The occurrence of a second, generally fainter, image of an object next to the original object, creating an indistinct vision is what double vision or ghosting is. This problem is generally an effect of irregular astigmatism brought on by surgery. Like several other lasik-related vision problems, double vision often goes away over a period of time.

Starbursts cause a person to see lights as blurred. Often spikes or rays of light seem to radiate out of the center of the light source. Generally it affects night time vision, but in some cases, it might be a problem for all light sources at any time of the day.

However, there have been significant advances in this eye surgery and the risks have also diminished significantly. New innovations like Iris registration and Intralase promise to take the risk factor down to as little as 1%. That would be a remarkable achievement. However, a lot of the risk factor is also dependent on the experience and expertise of the surgeon.

Surgeons who have performed more than 500 such operations can be considered to be experienced enough. Of course the more experienced the surgeon is the more price will you have to pay for him to operate on you. Also to keep it safe, surgeons often operate only one eye so that the risks are limited to one eye only.

Over the last 10 or 12 years lasik surgery has gained a kind of popularity that has seldom been witnessed in the history of surgery. A few things have led to such an astronomical rise in the popularity of this particular surgical procedure. First of all, the relative low risk associated with this operation. With success rate around 95% and the figure going up with each new innovation there are hardly any other operation which can rival it on its safety.

Moreover, the operation takes extremely little time to complete with each eye being operated in under 10 minutes. That is remarkable for any operation and it can only be achieved because much of the operation these days is computer guided. Not that the expertise of the surgeon doesn’t matter. It does, and very much so.

This surgery is a great way to deal with the problem of astigmatism. Now what is astigmatism. Astigmatism is where the patient has irregularities in his cornea which as a result distorts the image formed on the retina of the eye. That can actually rectify this problem and help the patient to live a normal life.

You would now be curious about how actually the lasik operation is performed. Here is a synopsis for you.

This operation is also highly effective in other conditions related to the eye. These would include myopia and hyperopia. While the former doesn’t allow you to see things at a distance, the latter is exactly the opposite where you cannot read the newspaper without the reading glasses.
