Save up to $48,000 by having LASIK Vision Correction

Quite candidly, the perception of many people as well as our own was that a primary determinant of the affordability of LASIK  was strongly related to the cost of having it done. We wonder if centers that charge slightly more or less than others benefit or are hurt by placing financial stress on the patients who elect to choose them.  We are concerned about how important the cost of the procedure weighs in the average patient’s decision.  Therefore, we decided to model the costs of LASIK at our current charges for the procedure  as compared to the costs of glasses, contacts, solutions, and routine eye care to see just how much of a premium was involved for those who choose this option.  We expected LASIK to cost more, and were very surpised just the opposite.  The bottom line — having LASIK saves you money!

When we started looking at the actual costs for eye care over a lifetime we knew that there was a significant cost to glasses, contacts, solutions, and examinations for this care.  We also knew that there are costs for LASIK and the costs associated with this care as well.  For this reason we never put pen to paper and we were very surprised at our findings.

After a very conservative analysis these were our results:

A 20 year-old could save over $48,000 over his/her lifetime with LASIK LASIK could pay for itself within 4 years (if you wear prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, and use contact lenses) LASIK is even cost effective for most people in their 40s and 50’s!

These statistics are based on the average U.S. life expectancy of 77.7 years, and our own estimates of vision correction costs based on current average industry prices and recommendations.

These are the basic cost assumptions of this analysis:

Prescription Eyeglasses: $200 every other year Prescription Sunglasses: $350 every other year Contact Lenses: $40 every month Contact Lens Supplies: $12 every month Annual Eye Exam (also applies to LASIK): $105 every year LASIK Cost: $3,500

Actual  prices will probably vary from our calculations, based on what your situation – your annual visits may be more or less expensive than our estimate, and you may pay a different amount for glasses or contacts or buy them at in less frequent intervals – but we hope that this will be helpful for anyone who is researching the costs and benefits of LASIK.

Importantly this model includes important eye examinations AFTER LASIK which add costs to the LASIK choice, but is far outweighed by the other costs.  The savings are probably even greater than calculated because there is an increase or escalation in the costs of things like glasses every year whereas the costs with LASIK are fixed.  Even taking into account that a small percentage of LASIK patients may need an enhancement procedure years later, there is still an obvious and significant savings by having the procedure.

What really puts this over the top is the benefit of financing at zero or a low percentage, since the time of financing takes away the large capital cost of having the procedure, and by the time that the procedure is paid for, about half of the savings has been realized.  Also, the other half can be covered with the fact that the surgery is tax deductible and/or the use of flexible savings accounts to use pre-tax dollars to cover the costs.

If you want the details, this table shows at ages in 5 year increments what the projected savings over a lifetime are for having LASIK surgery.  For instance, a 30 year old would need prescription glasses and sunglasses every two years and contact lenses and supplies totaling almost $53,000.  Even with the costs of LASIK and examinations, there is a savings of over $39,000!  Yes, some people may not wear contacts this entire time, but it is our experience that most LASIK patients are contact wearers who also have prescription glasses.  Also, we are being very conservative on glasses costs.  Some prescription glasses from designers with all the bells and whistles come in close to $1,000 just for one pair of glasses.

Based on the estimated costs of this analysis we can see that contact lenses and their associated costs are substantial.  This assumption is for daily wear disposable contacts.  Obviously for all of those who have significant astigmatism and require toric contact lenses the costs are significantly more.  By contrast, anyone who only wears glasses can subtract the contact lens costs from their personal analysis.  Even for these people, there is still a savings by having LASIK over glasses alone, or for that matter for contacts alone without glasses.  The latter is not recommended in that contact lens patients should always have glasses, at least for a backup should they not be able to wear their contacts.  Again, our experience is that most patients have a number of glasses and contacts when they come to visit us for consideration of LASIK.  This analysis also does not take into consideration the increased costs of bifocals or trifocals, which are substantially more expensive than single vision glasses.

Based on all of these factors, we believe that on average this analysis is accurate for the average person and thus demonstrates the financial benefit of LASIK clearly.  There are certainly many disclaimers that should be made on this type of an analysis and to the extent that we have missed anything important, please forgive us and feel free to comment to this post and we will make corrections.

So how often is there something that you can do which will benefit you for a lifetime, providing you with an improved quality of life AND save you money?  Here is my epiphany — I think that at some level patients have realized this fact and that is why so many millions of people worldwide have decided to have LASIK vision correction.  Not only for the lifestyle benefit, but also for the financial benefit.

In a broader context, is not a healthier America a better and more cost effective America?  Can we learn something here that has broader implications in the health care debate and legislation before us today?  The emphasis should be on what we can provide to the American people that is valuable and will ultimately decrease the cost of health care and increase human productivity which will make us net a wealthier nation.  This country is based on a combination of a free market economy and helping those who cannot afford to help themselves.  We should be able to extend this philosophy to medical, dental, and eye care.

In the meantime, I am happy to learn that LASIK has helped to provide a better life while saving money for all of those who needed it.

Here is the most impressive thing,  the epiphany.   While $3500 is a substantial amount of money, it is just about the smallest number on this chart.  Would it really matter if this was $5,000 instead?  Not much really.  So the costs for this procedure should not drive the decision to have it but rather whether it is a good idea for a particular person and also picking the best provider to have the greatest chance of realizing these savings.  Second, even people who are over 40 years of age still will have a substantial benefit.  In fact at age 40 there is still over $30,000 of savings by having LASIK.

LASIK MD – How To Find The Right Doctor!

Finding the right LASIK MD should not be very difficult if you know what to look for and more importantly what is important. Today, with the increased popularity of Lasik eye surgery, it’s possible to find doctors and eye centers now advertising using direct mail and newspaper ads. Although this may be a way to start the search for the right Lasik surgeon, it’s not the way to decide who will do the procedure

LASIK is the most popular refractive surgery procedure used today and stands for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. Due to advances in technology, there are newer procedures however most are focused on delivering a better result for the patient. Due to the increase in popularity, the price of refractive corrective surgery has continued to drop

Do not assume however that the way to find the right doctor is by price alone. Here’s a short checklist to see if the doctors or eye care facilities that are being considered should stay on the short list of possible prospects

Education. Medical licenses are typically a general authorization to practice almost any type of medicine. Just being a medical doctor isn’t enough. Look for someone with specialized refractive eye surgery education. Although all ophthalmologists are considered specialists, they all aren’t qualified to do refractive surgery.

Experience. How many of the surgeries has the doctor successfully completed? Although technology continues to make it easier to obtain a satisfactory result, experience does matter.

Equipment and procedure to be used. Today there are many difference “flavors” of Lasik. Customer Lasik using Wavefront technology offers some of the latest advances in this field. No need to go to someone using yesterday’s technology when the newest equipment is out there and available.

Finally, there’s price. Looking in almost any major city Sunday newspaper and it becomes evident where the larger eye centers and Lasik Centers are located. These are the ones that advertise using expensive full page and color pages in the newspaper. Although most focus on price, note that due to their size, these groups and Lasik surgeons typically do a lot of business. This means experience! It also suggests that they have the capital to purchase the latest equipment. So don’t be quick to eliminate the heavy advertisers without due consideration.

Finding the right Lasik MD is not difficult considering the growth of this field. Due to competition, many doctors and eye centers, even those using the latest technological advances, are very price competitive. The most important part of finding the right medical facility to doctor is not to decide who will do your procedure based solely on price alone

Lasik Eye Surgery or Contacts?

When it comes to choosing between lasik eye surgery and contact lenses, my friends are split down the middle. Some swear by lasik, while others are hell bent on contacts. But finally I see a break, with advent of technology and more comforting ads, the fear factor and squeamishness seem to be reducing.

I asked the question to Dr. Andrew Caster, Los Angeles Lasik Surgeon. I told him about fear, an all encompassing trait that overrides everything else.

My opinion is Lasik laser vision correction is one of the great medical advances of our time. There is really no other procedure in all of medicine that combines such profound improvement with lack of pain and very rapid recovery.

Now there are a plethora of different lasers to choose from, including my favorite, the WaveLight Allegretto. Talk to your doctor. There are so many procedures now including Lasik, IntraLase, PRK, and Lasek. Choose something which is good for you.

Having said that, Laser vision correction is not right for everyone. Only perform the procedure if your doctor is confident that excellent results can be obtained. For the 30% odd unsuitable candidates, I guess contacts is the answer.

There we go again!

The views are my own and is not medical advice. Please talk to your eye doctor for your specific case.

Lasik – a Technical Innovation

Lasik refers to a refractive laser surgery performed on eyes of the person suffering from myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. This surgery is very convenient for a patient as it takes comparatively less time and the patient does not feel much pain. Many people prefer this kind of surgery over wearing eyeglass or contact lenses. Lasik technique is a type of surgery which is very cost effective and can be done in a very short time period. Nowadays, this type of eye surgery is well performed in Lasik vision institute.

This technique of Lasik was first introduced by a Spanish ophthalmologist and in 1960, he developed the first microkeratome. At that time it was used to cut thin flaps in the cornea region and to change its shape. In the year 1990, Lasik surgery was developed and it rapidly became popular due to its reward of greater precision and less complications. With more investigation, this surgery has become very common and has significantly improved the procedure of surgery. In almost every country people have started to see this surgery as a new ray of optimism for the correction of eye defects.

Any person willing to go for the Lasik operation is instructed to discontinue wearing contact lenses approximately 10-15 day prior to the date of surgery. Before conducting the surgery, the patients’ corneas are examined with the help of a pachymeter to ascertain its thickness and with a topographer to measure surface contour. This also enables the surgeon to notice astigmatism and any other irregularities in the cornea. After the surgery, patients have to undergo a course in antibiotics and put anti-inflammatory eye drops for some time. Patients are advised to wear a dark pair of eyeglasses to protect it from light after Lasik surgery.

With the passage of time, there has been a marked improvement in the procedure of surgery, but we still are waiting to for conclusive evidence to see it is absolutely safe in the long run. There are a chances of a patient suffering from complications like slipped flap, corneal infection, glare or halo and some of these complications are irreversible as this process of Lasik surgery is irreversible. With time this cornea surgery has become affordable and safe for people and Lasik cost has gone down tremendously. The effects of undergoing this surgery and its consequences in the long run will be known at later stage.

Research a Lasik Institute Thoroughly – Lasik Institute

The lasik eye surgery was first executed in 1991 in the United States and since then it has become very popular. What necessary research should a person undertake in order to have a safe and a successful Lasik surgery? First and chief, one should realize that all Lasik centers are not of the same standard. To ensure that one has a comfortable and but a surgical hub where the Lasik surgeries are executed. These Lasik institutes are set up at many places or centers around the world. Right from small private a successful operation, it is requisite to find a reputed Lasik institute that offers the patients all the state-of-the-art technological trials, equipments and a good patient care unit.

A Lasik institute is nothing health center to large centers in cities that are globally connected, Lasik institutes are easy to find. However, searching a reputable Lasik institute requires fortitude and patience. Lasik cost comes to around $ 1,500 per eye.

Lasik works to accurate light refraction in the eyes. In a normal eye, light is captured by the lens of our eye that is, the segment of our eye positioned directly behind the iris. The light is then refracted from the lens to the retina which is at the back of an eye. The retina takes those refracted light rays and renovates them to signals that are sent to the optic nerve in the form of visual images. However due to illness, heredity, injury or aging our eyes experience refractive difficulties and this is what is termed as nearsightedness or farsightedness. Because the light is not refracted properly, the optic nerve accepts a signal of a blurry image. At a Lasik institute, a skilled surgeon makes corrections to the way in which our eyes refract light by resurfacing the cornea which is done with laser technology allowing crisper, cleaner light refraction and better vision.

Surgeons who are vastly qualified with Lasik technology are employed in good Lasik institutes and hence they should be considered while performing custom Lasik surgeries. Try to collect commendation from people who have done Lasik surgeries ad they are the people who had hands-on experience. Internet can also help in conducting follow a line of investigation about good Lasik institutes. A Lasik institute is however only as good as the surgeons who work there.
